View of Saddleback Lake from atop Saddleback Mountain.
SADDLEBACK MOUNTAIN TRAIL: The most popular and scenic summer hiking route to the summit is from the Saddleback Mountain Ski Area. Begin at the base lodge and follow the green chairlift (“The Surrey”) to the top of the “Gold Rush” Trail. Directly above the top of this lift is the “Haymaker” Trail. This particular trail is wide and offers great views all the way to the top of the “Stagecoach” chairlift. From this point, follow the “Cliffhanger” Trail, which rises from behind the top of the “Stagecoach” lift, and continues to the top of the “Wells Fargo” Lift. Directly behind the upper building, a short, narrow trail leads to the mountains’ barren summit and offers excellent panoramic views of the Rangeley Lakes Region. Please be sure to note where this trail connects in the above-tree-line area, for your return trip via the trail. Ski Trail maps are available at the Saddleback Base Lodge. The approximate distance from base to summit is approximately 2 miles. Another approach to Saddleback’s summit is via the Appalachian Trail. This approach is twice as long as the ski lift hike, but much more gradual, and passes Piazza Rock and several small ponds. Pick up the AT on Route 4 south of Rangeley. This is a beautiful hiking trip for the whole family!
